Abstract

Leadership in addiction counseling is not only an administrative skill but also an ethical mandate. This conceptual paper examines leadership competencies most desired by addiction professionals, analyzes common leadership styles in clinical settings, and integrates these perspectives into a conceptual framework that links ethical obligations, professional practice, and workforce sustainability. Drawing from transformational, servant, democratic, and coaching leadership theories as well as the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) code of ethics, the paper argues that effective leadership can mitigate counselor burnout, enhance job satisfaction, and ultimately improve client outcomes. The proposed framework positions leadership development as both a professional necessity and an ethical imperative for the field of addiction counseling
